ForewordWe are currently in our 41st season having started in 1968. During the 25th season we were lucky that some of our committee members had the foresight to record what they could from old newspaper reports, Knox Centre records, ex club athletes, parents and other sources to compile a loose leaf binder book on the history of our club up to that time (1992/93 season). The original is held by the author and club Life Member Kerry Hodgkinson. Most of the historical content on these pages are from this book. Please also see Some Recollections webpage for items taken from Knox LAC, Bayswater Bullets Committee minutes and club newsletters. If any ex club members have any additional historical information not covered, could you please contact us by clicking on the "Contacts" button above I have added some of my memories with details from local newspapers on the Knox Centre website about its beginnings which can be seen at: www.klac23.org.au/memories.htm The first stage of our history project is the "Little Athletics - The Early History" has now been posted on our website HERE! by Stephen Egan
Bayswater Bullets 40 Year History Computer DVD
Introduction(written in 1992) The reason for writing this book was to compile a history of the Bayswater Little Athletics Club from its humble beginnings in 1968 thru the following 25 years noting the changes that occurred, to see who our athletes were and their achievements, there parents and their contribution to the club over the years. This book was the idea of myself and Janet Caulfield and would not have been possible if not for the help of the people listed below: Many thanks go to...... Bruce Unthank (Fairpark LAC) - for the structure of this book Janet Caulfield - for helping me wade thru all the paperwork for info John Hodgkinson - for his patience while I was so absorbed with this book BLAC Committee - allowing me to do the book Noel Rasti (President KLAC) - for obtaining information & guiding me Esma Harrington - for spending an afternoon with me & relating earlier history Isobel Addicoat - for desperately trying to remember all the kids names from those early days By Kerry Hodgkinson ( in 1992 ) In the Beginning......The idea of Trevor Billingham's "Little Athletics" started on Saturday 3rd October 1964 on a Geelong oval with a small group of children doing 50 and 100 metre runs. The Knox Centre started in 1968, "arousing more public enthusiasm than almost any other youth movement", with 10 clubs, Bayswater being one of these. Our first season was at Boronia High School, Tormore Road where the dedication of parents would mow and mark out the track on a Friday night. The second season was the move to Chandler Park, no grass mowing but 5,000 metres of track to mark out each week. 1978, ten years later on - the move to an unfinished Knox Park. From these humble beginnings, 3 tracks later, greatly improved facilities achieved by the dedication of parents and athletes alike, we are still a successful club, quarter of a century later.... The Early YearsThe Knox Little Athletics Centre started with great enthusiasm by the Knox Shire, local schools, parents, the Victorian Egg Board (who were the Little Aths sponsors) and the Victorian Little Athletics Association, just four years after the formation of the first ever Little Athletics Centre - Geelong. Little Athletics is a concept, unique only to Australia. An initial meeting was first called in the old Shire offices in Selman Ave, Ferntree Gully by Cr Ehnholm, then the Knox Shire President. In an article in the Knox local paper on 21st August 1968, it stated the Shire of Knox Little Athletics Association got away to a good start when over 200 parents attended. This resulted in a further meetings at the Shire offices during September and on 30th September 1968, it officially inaugurate the Knox Little Athletics Centre and formed clubs based on the schools within the shire. (Knox did not become a City until 1969) The Knox Centre thus became the 23rd centre in the Victorian Little Athletics Association.
1968/69 Season Established in 1968, Bayswater is one of the foundation clubs of the Knox Centre and this first season had at least 38 athletes (obtained from local newspaper results). The original Club Affiliation form can be seen here. Apart from Bayswater, the other foundation clubs were Boronia West, Dorset, Fairpark, Knoxfield, Rangeview, St Johns, St Josephs, Studfield and Wantirna. Today, only seven of these clubs survive, with an eighth "The Fields" made up from the merging of the Studfield and Eastfield teams. The first season was held at the old Boronia High School sports field opposite the Knox Leisure Centre in Tormore Road, Boronia, which today is a housing estate. The season commenced on 2nd November 1968 and was officially opened by
the Knox Shire Mayor Cr Wally Tew. This was the first weekend after the
completion of the1968 Mexico Olympics,
and the children were already
familiar with the unusual named throwing and jumping field events from watching
the Olympic highlights on Black and White TV. (Colour TV was still 6 years away) The running track consisted of a 200m lap grass track and a separate 100m straight grass track with age groups from Under 8 to Under 12. Just two weeks later, the Knox Centre was in danger of having nowhere to hold their track meets. The Boronia High School Advisory Council and some Councillors on the Knox Shire were bickering over who will pay the mowing and toilet cleaning costs for the Saturday morning competition. This was resolved by the Knox Centre, with parents doing it themselves. They mowed and marked out the track on Friday evenings for the Saturday morning competitions for the rest of the season. The Knox Centre competed for the first time ever as a team at the Ringwood Highland Games, which was held at Jubilee Park on Sat, 1st March 1969. This festival had Scottish traditional dancing and events such as “Tossing the Caber” but also had a limited number of junior athletics events. The Knox Centre selected their best athletes to competed against the best athletes invited from the Box Hill, Springvale and Nunawading Little Athletics Centres. Knox was the winning Centre of the day despite very strong competition from Box Hill. Winning Bayswater athletes representing Knox were Girls U/9 Linda Faull with a Gold Medal in the High Jump and a Silver in the Discus, Girls U/12 Lee France with a Silver Medal in the 220 yards and a Bronze in the Discus. Boys U/11 Bruce Beaton won a Bronze medal in the 880 yards. Boys U/11 Mark Watycha won a Bronze Medal in the Discus and Boys U/12 Glen Mackwell also won a Bronze in the Shot Put.
The Bayswater team did very well in this first track and field season as they came second in the Club Shield, Bruce Beaton came second in the Champion Boys Shield and Lee France came Second in the Champion Girls Shield.
From another article in the Knox local paper on 14th May 1969 regarding the up coming KLAC First Annual Meeting "The high standard of results obtained in the first season of Little Athletics was reflected in the recent school athletic sports where many records were broken. As an example, an under 12 competitor from Bayswater Little Athletics Club, entered the Open Mile in the High School sports, and won easily in competition with boys of 16 and 17 years." This person was Glenn Mackwell.
The first Cross Country winter season commenced on 24th May 1969 under the supervision of Mr Geoff Warren, a former Empire Games middle distance runner. It was held on alternate Saturdays, at the one location which is now the Softball Fields on the corner of Gilbert Park and Ferntree Gully Roads, Knoxfield. It was used as cattle paddocks back then and was a very boggy field and hard going when wet, plus had the added obstacle of dodging the cow pats. An article in the Knox local paper on 28th May 1969, titled "They wanted it rough" Cr Grogan at the last meeting of Knox Shire said the Little Athletics Association had requested the use of Knox Park (Knoxfield) because they wanted a track, 'a little bit rough', "They're certainly going to get it", quipped Cr Grogan. The Victorian Cross Country Championships were held at McLeod on 2nd August 1969. Knox won two Gold and one Silver out of eight events and were the only centre to win more than one gold. One of the Gold Medals was won by Bayswater's Under 12 athlete Glen Mackwell in the 2000 metre event, "leaving his nearest rival 100 yards behind". In the Knox Cross Country Championships on 22nd August 1969, Glen Mackwell won the Under 12 2000 metres event in a record time of 8min 9 sec, followed in second place by Bayswater's Peter Noordhoff in 8 min 59 sec The first Annual Meeting of the Bayswater Little Athletics Club was held on 10th September 1969 at the Bayswater State School. 1968/69 Club Awards 1968/69 Championship Results 1969 Cross Country Results
1969/70 Season
This season had eleven clubs. A meeting was held at Rangeview and it was decided to divide the club into two as the previous seasons registration was over 150 athletes, with 40 of them coming from The Basin. This new club was called "Basin Heights". Another club also to join the Knox Centre this season was Sherbrooke which went on to form their own Centre a few years later, and still exists today. Wantirna, which only had 10 athletes in the previous season did not continue for this season and was not reformed until fifteen years later in season 1984/85. In the Knox Gazette on 8th October 1969; Seven hundred children, led by the Police Highland Pipe Band, marched through Boronia streets on Saturday to mark the opening of the 1969/70 Little Athletics season for the Knox Centre. The largest club was Bayswater with 97 children.
A local newspaper report from the 25th October 1969 program; Seven hundred children cheered Olympic Champion Ron Clarke when he came to the Chandler Park to watch the Knox Little Athletics Centre in action on Saturday. The champion was at the ground unrecognised for some time before one of the children noticed him. He was then introduced to the children, then circled the ground to speak to them and their parents who came to help. In a local newspaper article on 27th January 1970 titled "Records Tumble at Little Aths", Benefiting from the dedicated training given by Melbourne Walker Alan Johnson, Knox Little Athletics set three more new Walk records. Two of these were by Bayswater athletes. An outstanding performance was the Under 10 record by Stephen Davis of Bayswater Club, whose time of 4 min 20.5 sec was 3.3 sec better than the present Victorian record, and bettered Rick Dyer's two week old Knox record, which was also in Victorian time. Another record was set by Bruce Beaton of Bayswater Club also, who walked a 4 min 16 sec in the Under 12 event. Under the heading "State Time Fall to Bayswater" in the local paper on the 14th February 1970 results, Under 10 Stephen Davis of Bayswater again bettered the State Little Athletics record time to set a new Knox Walk record on Saturday of 4min 19.0 secs. His sister Susan tied with Susan Smith of Dorset in setting a new Knox Triple Jump record Under 9 of 6.98m. From the local Newspaper on 21st March 1970; On Wednesday, March 25th, Knox Gold Medallist Bruce Beaton will compete in the interstate challenge between West Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. Bruce is one of only 20 Under 12's chosen from the whole of Victoria, and it is hoped that Knox Centre supporters will turn up in force at Olympic Park to see the challenge. Bayswater's Stephen Davis won the inaugural John Bennett Memorial Trophy presented to the athlete which had the most outstanding performance in a single event during the season which was for the 800m Walk.

1971/72 Season The largest registration this season was Bayswater with 59 registered athletes. A new Club to form this season was Bayswater South which had the lowest registration of 31 athletes. The first practice session for the season was reported in the local paper on 22nd September 1971 and stated the last year's Champion Girl, Bayswater's Debra Brown was off to a good start with a personal best Triple Jump of 7.88m. It also said Bayswater welcomed back a "Knox Original" in Linda Faull who has been competing for several seasons with the Bendigo Centre, and is now back with her old club. Knox resumed Little Athletics on 15th January 1972 after the Christmas break and hosted children from the Sherbrooke and Box Hill Centres as they did not start until the following week. Two Knox records were broken with Susan Davis (Bayswater) clocking 1 min10.4 sec for the Girls Under 11 400m. The Knox Centre ran out victors after the lead had changed several times during the day. Susan was awarded the "Best Girl" trophy. This meeting was held in aid of the Knoxbrooke Training Centre and the competition would be an annual event against these two other Centres. Under the heading "In Top Gear" in the Knox Gazette 25th January 1972, Last seasons premiers, Bayswater Little Athletics Club, on Saturday showed that it is the club to beat in the Knox Lions Club Premiership this season. Doubling the number of placegetters of their nearest rivals, Bayswater have extended their lead following Saturdays program. In the Knox News on 2nd February 1972 under the heading "Veterans Show Form": Two of Knox's "veteran" little athletes, Debbie Brown and Judy Addicoat, both of Bayswater, provided a thrilling finish to the day as they fought out the Under 11 girls High Jump on Saturday. Judy failed at 1.16m and Debbie, after clearing this height, failed at 1.18m. Debbie's 1.16m was the best Under 11 girl in Knox this season. An article in the Knox Free Press 23rd February 1972 on the Highland Games in Ringwood, representing Knox against eight other Centres, Bayswater's Susan Davis won the Under 11 Girls 400m event, Judy Addicoat won the 100m event and Debra Brown won the 60m Hurdles event. "Bayswater Scoops Little Aths Pool" says article in the 22nd March 1972 Knox News. Bayswater club took most of the honours on Saturday at Chandler Park, winning the Little Athletics Premiers Shield for Best Club, and the Shield for Best Girls Club. They also won the Lions Club Pennants for first in both sections and star Deborah Brown was once again named Champion Girl of Knox Centre. In the Victorian State Championships, Susan Davis obtained a Silver Medal for Knox in the Under 11 Long Jump with a distance of 4.32m. 1971/72 Club Awards 1971/72 Championship Results 1972 Cross Country Results
1972/73 Season In the Knox News on 4th October 1972, "The Olympic flag brought home from Munich by International veteran athlete Geoff Warren, flew at Chandler Park on Saturday as Knox Little Athletes complete their final day's practice competition before the official opening of the season. On the 7th October 1972, led by the Mitcham Pipe Band, Knox Little Athletics marched through Boronia for the Official opening of the season by the Mayor, Cr Wally Tew, who opened the the Centre's first season five years earlier when Shire President in 1968. Bayswater's Deborah Brown, champion girl last season held the Knox Banner along with the champion boy Barry McGhee from Dorset. Bayswater had 75 registered athletes this season - 30 Boys and 45 Girls. "Bayswater hits front" says the headline in the Knox Gazette 17th October 1972. Bayswater, last year's Knox athletics premiers, again led the placing's at Chandler Park on Saturday. And their champion Debra Brown, took the only record for the day, clocking 17.1 secs in the 100 metres for the under 12 girls. Debra's time beat the Knox record by 0.4 secs. She also won the 800m and High Jump events. In the Knox Gazette 14th November 1972, Julie Nickevich of Bayswater equalled the best ever High Jump in any competition by a boy or girl when she took the Knox record for the Under 12 record of 1.33m (about 5 foot). Julie bettered this one month later when she jumped 1.34m In the 1973 Ringwood Highland Games, Judy Addicoat won a Bronze Medal in the 100m. In the Knox Free Press on 13th December 1972 under the heading "Liz starred in athletics" Seven year old Elizabeth Addicoat was unbeatable in Knox Little Athletics on Saturday when she won all of her six events. The Knox News on 7th February 1972 titled "Susan is small but Slippery" Bayswater Little Athletics Club Susan Davis is probably the smallest under 12 girl at Knox Centre, but she is certainly one of the best at breaking records. On Saturday, Susan set one of the only two records with a leap of 9.17m for the under 12 Triple Jump record, and also won the 200m and came second in the walk and 800m events. The other record also went to Bayswater. Elizabeth Addicoat with a new High Jump record of 1.02 for Knox. Elizabeth also won the 100m and 200m under 8 events.

1992/93 Season Celebrated our 25th anniversary season with 61 registered and 59 active athletes. A newly designed T-Shirt designed by Rodney and Naomi Earsman was introduced which was Fluoro orange with black ribbed neck, sleeves & side bands and the Bayswater Bullets logo on the back. Shorts or briefs were black. This was approved by KLAC in August 1992 In December 1992, Bayswater Bullets athlete Paul Caulfield came 4th representing Victoria in the 1500m Walk for the Australian All School Track and Field Championships held in Perth. In the State finals, Bayswater Bullets had 11 girls and 13 boys who made it through to State Level. BAYSWATER'S Hayden Lacy (above) broke a Victorian record in his bid to win a high-jump silver medal in the Australian Little Athletics Championships at Olympic Park. A student at Bayswater Secondary College, Hayden, 13, jumped 1.72 metres, breaking the Victoria Junior record. He jumped as high as the winner, but came second on the count back. A competitor with Bayswater Bullets Little Athletics, Hayden began competing when he was six. However, unlike many athletics hopefuls, Hayden does not train from one week to the next. Attempts by the coach of the Victorian State side to train Hayden did not meet with success - Hayden deciding one day a week was enough. Unlike most high-jumpers Hayden does not accelerate his run-up as he gets closer to the jump, keeping a consistent pace instead. With his recent success, however, Hayden has begun to take his sport more seriously and wants to keep jumping. "THE NEXT 25 YEARS - THE FUTURE OF LITTLE ATHLETICS" Politics, plus numerous numbers of different sporting activities available, will make keeping the large number of athletes involved with Little Athletics difficult. In South Australia the Government has passed a law that children less than 12 years are not to take part in competitive sporting activities. Because of this the Little Athletics National Championships, which were held for the Under 12's have been changed to Under 13's. Little Athletics has always been, and always will be an activity that involves the whole family. It requires parents to become involved as Officials for the program to be run. There has been a notable decrease in the number of adults attending our Friday night and Saturday morning programs, which makes the running of our program more difficult. Many things haven't changed over the last 25 years and will probably continue the same way well into the future. Reading minutes as well as talking to ex-members, obtaining the Officials required to run our programs has always been difficult, but parents always given their support when called upon. We are hoping to have the track at Knox Centre re-surfaced. This may even occur before the start of next season. This will depend on Council and State Government co-operation. If these plans come to fruition, major State Carnivals may be held at the Centre, eliminating the high cost of running these carnivals at Olympic Park. There is no reason that Little Athletics will not continue to be as successful into the next 25 years as it has for the past 25 years. There will always be obstructions arising but without parents working together with the goal of providing the best facilities and the correct environment in which to compete, any difficulties can be easily eliminated. With so many other sports available, clubs will not want to be complacent with the way they do their recruiting, or their support of their athletes in the future. As long as those elected members running the Clubs and the Centre working together towards what is best for all children, our future should remain bright. Article in the Knox Sherbrooke Post on 6th April 1994 (a simular article also appeared in the Knox News on 4th April 1994) ATHLETES IN RECORD-BREAKING FORM ATHLETES from the Bayswater Bullets Little Athletics Club have recorded some remarkable results in the Victorian Little Athletics Championships, held at Olympic Park. The club's overall medal tally was four Gold, one Silver and one Bronze but more importantly, five club records were broken and another equalled along with three Knox centre records and one State record. Sisters Peta (Under 12) and Lindel (Under 10) Hodgkinson dominated walk events - Peta won gold in the 1500 metre event in a new club record while Lindel captured Silver in the 1100 metre Walk, also in a club record time. Lindel also equalled the club record with her fourth place finish in the High Jump. It was an eventful carnival for Under 12 Daniel Sword, which started promisingly with victory in his 80 metres hurdle heat in a club and centre record time. However, with victory in sight in the final, Sword fell at the second last hurdle and was forced to spend two days in the Royal Children's Hospital after breaking his wrist. Better luck for his older brother Ben, who captured the Under 13 sprint double, setting a club record and centre record on his way to victory in the 200 metres. Star of the meeting was Under 14 Hayden Lacy, whose leap of 1.83 metres was good enough not only for the gold medal, but also earned him a club, centre and State record. Under 12 Lee Earsman also impressed in his high jump event, with a jump of 1.50 metres good enough for a bronze.

But now aware of his natural talents, Ben believes he has the potential to compete at Olympic level one day. Ben 13, of Ferntree Gully, broke the sprinting records at the Australian Team Championships in Adelaide. Ben is this week's Knox News Sports Star. During the athletics season, the Hodgkinson family is on the run - literally. Every Saturday morning, Bayswater resident Kerry Hodgkinson takes her two younger children, Lori 9, and Jarryd, 11 to Knox Park to take part in Little Athletics. In the afternoon, she takes 17-year-old Peta and 15-year-old Lindel to compete in Knox Sherbrooke Woman's Amatuer Athletic Club. For the past 12 years, Mrs Hodgkinson has been involved with Bayswater Bullets LAC - all from someone who says she was never the athletics type. "I've become very involved committee-wise, which I really enjoy." she said. Mrs Hodgkinson laughingly said the family joined Little Aths "out of frustration". "When Peta was young, she tried so many different sports. There was rollerskating, which she did for about three months, then gymnastics for six months. In the end a friend said "Why don't you come down and try Little Athletics?" so we did. Peta never looked back. She was the Little Aths state champion walker for four consecutive years and has returned to training this month after a 12-month break. Lindel followed her sister into Little Aths, her speciality being the High Jump. She has competed at state and national level. Lori, following Peta's footsteps, likes the walking event and Jarryd's favourite event is High Jump. In the Eastern Regional Metropolitan Championships on 13/14th February 1999, Under 9 Lori Hodgkinson won a Silver medal in the High Jump and a Bronze medal in the 1100m Walk.
