Presidents Report 2007-08
Firstly, a warm
welcome to our special guests Ron Papst, a club Life Member whose grandson Troy
is currently competing in Cross Country and Cr Adam Gill,
our local Ward Councillor. Both of our guests will be helping present the
awards a little later.
There is a lot of
work that goes into running a club and I would like to thank those who helped
throughout the season.
To all our parents
in conducting your official parent duty. Bayswater Bullets came second in the
Kathy Hale Supporters Award, which puts our club at the top in supplying the
weekly officials needed and helping the Knox Centre in setting up for special
event days, working bees and other areas such as letter stuffing night.
To Alex & Tracey
Thomson as our Club Team Managers who I cannot thank enough for all the work
they have put in at the track. The many hours spent weekly at home in keeping
the results and PB’s up to date as well as creating the PB results for the
website. Especially in keeping everyone informed with the notices and following
up on entries for Region and Knox major events.
Jenny Thomas in
taking the committee minutes as Secretary, distributing flyers at Bayswater
Primary School; arranging the twilight BBQ supplies and for picking up the
additional items for the Christmas raffle. Also to Mike Thomas as our twilight
BBQ cook once again.
Emma Shearer in
looking after the books as club Treasurer, doing the banking duties, paying the
club’s bills, organising the audited report, and helping out at the Bayswater
Super Fete stall.
Committee Member
Fran Barton-Smith in organising our stall at the Bayswater Super Fete last year.
In particular, the work she did for our Christmas Raffle. Fran had spent many
hours approaching shops in the local area as well as Knox City to have 14
businesses donate items for our Christmas Raffle, which was a fantastic effort.
Fran also organised the booking of this hall with the school.
Committee Member
Tracey Bryant as our Tattslotto fundraising person as well as our Newsletter
Editor. I would also like to thank Tracey for all the work she did in organising
the Christmas BBQ. Tracey came up with this idea as a way for the families to
get to know each other, as we are normally so busy at the track.
Rob Holdway as our
discus Chief Official who he has just completed his fifth season.
Rob is also our club representative on the Knox Centre Competition
Committee, which involves attending the Wednesday night monthly meetings at the
track. Rob was Bayswater’s only representative at the Knox track “Clean up
Day” back in January as well as representing our club in helping set up for
our two major events - the Knox Open Twilight and Knox Championship Day.
Libby Egan as
Bayswater’s representative at the Knox Centre “letter mail out” night last
September; for dropping flyers off at Bayswater South and Bayswater West Primary
Schools and helping write events on the events board. Clare Egan for also
helping write out events as well as the many athletes who did the same in
between their events.
For our two rostered Canteen duty dates, we had assistance
from Sharon Holdway, Melissa Norton, Kate Gerrard, Tricia Richardson, Libby
Egan, Doug Nolan, Alex Thomson and Leo Maybus. The latter two also did double
shifts to ensure we had parents cover the whole shift.
To everyone that
made cakes or cookies or donated money in lieu and donating items for the
Christmas Raffle and Cake Stall. To Maria Nolan and Leo Maybus who helped on the
stall, to Mike Thomas, Stacey Goodger, Tracey Bryant and Emma Shearer who helped
sell raffle tickets around the ground. A special mention to Joyce Norton,
Cody’s Grandmother who generously made numerous cakes and cookies for us as
well as helping on our stall as well.
Thankyou to Stacey
Goodger in being our Bunnings BBQ fundraiser Co-Ordinator once again. This
included obtaining the permits and liaising with Maroondah City Council as well
as Bunnings to ensure all paperwork was in order as well as helping on the day.
To Fran Barton-Smith in ordering our Bunnings BBQ meat supplies In addition,
Brenda Ammann, Dean Barton-Smith, Rob Holdway, Doug Nolan, Neil Richardson, Emma
Shearer, Jenny Thomas, Alex and David Thomson also assisted at various times
throughout the day.
Little Athletics
main focus apart from fitness and having fun is on each athlete continually
improving on the own best time or distance. It is very pleasing to see that all
Bayswater athletes who have completed the full track & field season all
gained at least a Bronze PB medal.
The plans we
previously had for Bayswater Bullets 40th Anniversary next season
will no longer be done at a club level, but at the Knox Centre level. The Local
History Grant we obtained 18 months ago is now up in the air. This was after
losing our local sports researcher at the Knox Historical Society AGM during a
hostile committee takeover, which was disappointing, as we have not received any
of the research either done or partially done.
I‘m the
Chairperson of the Knox Centre’s 40th Anniversary Sub-Committee as
well as being the Centre History Co-ordinator. For those coming back next
season, we have a few events to make it a special season to remember.
The celebrations
will be officially kicked off in September by Mayor Cr Jim Penna, in celebrating
and recognising the contributions Little Athletics has brought to the Knox area
for the children and their families as an activity that involves the whole
family. In no other junior sport do you have as many parents joining in with
their children by the conducting events.
There will be a
“Come Back to Knox” family fun day on Saturday afternoon, 22nd
November 2008. On this day, each registered child will receive a limited edition
commemorative 40th medallion. Other 40th memorabilia items
will be available for sale. We have planned a photographic day where all
athletes and committees will be photographed as a group in the grandstand. Other
events planned will be on the Knox website under the “KLAC 1968-2008”
button.
The Cross Country
season well is underway and there are no fees for those competing in the track
& field season. So if you are not doing any other activities over winter,
come down one day to try it out. Already we have twelve athletes competing per
week including five new athletes joining Bayswater Bullets last month.
As I finish this
report, I urge those parents coming back next season to please consider coming
onto the Bayswater Bullets committee. We only have two nominations so far and
require at least six for the season to be run effectively. We meet around 6
times per season for about 2 hours to plan activities such as the season start,
cake and raffle stall, Bunnings BBQ and other activities such as today’s
presentations.
To those that leave
us this season, thankyou for your time with us and wish you and your children
all the best for their future activities.

Report 2007-08
It’s hard to
believe that another Track and Field season has come to an end.
Where did the year go? As
usual we may still be a small club but our Athletes are nothing short of
brilliant, with so many fantastic results we should all be very proud of them
all.
This season has had
some wonderful moments with all Athletes trying their best every week, once
again everyone has added many PB’s to their tally.
One of the highlights of been a team manager is to see the look on each
child’s face when they discover they have obtained yet another PB.
It makes it all worth it.
We started the
season with Relays, Nathan, Emily, Jessica, Alex, Erin, Annie and David all took
part this year and the last five made it through to State Level at Olympic Park.
Keep in mind that just making it to this level in any competition makes
you an instant winner. Alex Barton-Smith came 4th in the 4 x 100m;
Erin Holdway came 4th in the 4 x 100m; Annie Egan won a gold medal in
the 4 x 200m; and David Thomson brought home a full set of gold, silver and
bronze medals.
The fantastic thing
about Relays is that it’s a team sport and a fun way to make new friends from
all the other clubs. For a lot of
kids it’s is the highlight of the year. So
keep it in mind for the start of next season.
Our athletes
accomplishment continued throughout the year, Alex, Nathan, Annie, Erin and
David all took part at Regional Track and Field, which this year took place at
the Knox Track, which made a lot of us parents happy.
Annie Egan & Erin Holdway both U/10 girls, and David Thomson U/12 boy
all qualified for State Track & Field which was held at Bendigo this year.
It was at Regional
Track & Field that I experienced one of my personal Highlights of the year.
On this day I witnessed the true spirit of Little Athletics even though
he didn’t qualify for State this year, Nathan Goodger smashed a few of his
PB’s proving that competing against the best in region can really bring out
your best. He was overjoyed with his
results and had a smile on his face all day; you could just see how excited he
was. Keep up the fantastic attitude
Nathan and I’m sure you’ll go a long way.
Before heading off
to the big weekend at State Track & Field, two of our athletes David and
Annie made a quick detour to Albury to take part in the ‘State Multi-Event’
competition. It was well worth the long drive as both David & Annie won gold
medals making them the best overall athletes in their age group in the state.
Once again proving our club may be small but our Athletes accomplishments
aren’t.
State Track &
Field was a lot like last years…..HOT! The
weather certainly wasn’t kind, a cool breeze would have been nice, but it
didn’t happen. But it didn’t
stop our athletes from doing their best. David
Thomson came 7th in state with his 60m Hurdles & High Jump, 9th
in long jump & 80m hurdles; Erin Holdway came 9th in state with
Shot Put & 8th in Discus; And Annie came 9th in the
state for the 60m Hurdles, 5th in the 80m hurdles & 800m, and
brought home a bronze medal for the 400m.
The final big event
for the season was Knox Championship Day; we had a really good turn out and some
very happy athletes who did extremely well.
Annabell Thomas came 4th in Triple Jump & won a silver
medal; Tom Richardson won gold, silver & bronze; Nathan
Goodger won two silver & two Bronze; Clay Bryant took home two silver &
a bronze; Jack Bole-Brown won silver & 2 Bronze; Annie Egan received four
gold medals; Erin Holdway took home two gold; Emily Dewar came 4th in
the 60m Hurdles; Zac Thomas won a Bronze & came 4th in High jump;
and Finally Josh Holdway won three gold, one silver & one bronze.
As far as club
records went this year the book had to be rewritten yet again.
Erin Holdway has broken a club Record, Claire Elliott set two new
records, Annie Egan broke three and David Thomson managed to rewrite six of
them. Because Josh & Sharnee are
Bayswater Bullets First Youth Athletes, they both have the honour of setting all
the Youth Athletic records for the Bayswater Bullets.
Josh Holdway also set a new Knox Club Youth athletic Record for the
Discus & Hammer Throw, while David Thomson set a new Knox Club U/12 Record
for the Long Jump. And just to top it all off Annie Egan, David Thomson &
Josh Holdway also all won best overall athlete in their Age Groups at the
‘Knox Little Athletic centre’, what a fantastic achievement.
Just keep in mind
the reason so many of our athletes do so well is the amount of time and effort
they put into training. And we are
very fortunate that Knox Little Athletics has some of the best coaches around
who put in a amazing amount of their own time at no cost to the athletes, a full
time table of training times is available at the Knox Web site, and well worth
looking into for any athlete at any level. Training
actually starts before the next season begins, so keep your eye on the internet
for future details.
I think the main
reason our athletes do so well is because they all have great families standing
along side them. So thank-you to all
of the mum’s, dads, grandparents and friends that have supported them and the
club over this last season. If we
didn’t have the support of families we wouldn’t have little athletics.
So for all of you who regularly do your duty at the track, canteen &
cake stall, not to forget all the other fundraising during the year including
Bunning’s & Tattslotto, a very big thank you.
And if any of you would like to join the committee now would be a good
time as we really need your help. I
have been on the committee know for the last two years, and I can personally say
I have enjoyed this time immensely and I look forward to the coming years.
I would like to
quickly thank our president Steve Egan for the extraordinarily good job he does,
and not just for our club, he puts in just as much work for the Knox little
athletic centre as well. He’s
always helping out everywhere and the work he puts into the club internet sites
is just mind boggling. We would be
lost without him. Steve, thank you
We also need to say
a special farewell to two of our athlete’s, Josh Holdway & Sharnee
Griffiths. This has been their final
track & field season with us as Bayswater Bullets, it’s just a fact of
life that every child eventually grows up and moves on to bigger and better
things. We wish you both the very
best for your futures and any future sporting endeavors, you will be missed.
As for the rest of
you, we hope to see you early next season, but if that seems like a long wait
don’t forget that the cross country season has started, and it is a great way
to keep in shape for next seasons track and field.
