Knox Coaching & Training program
This page details the current coaching and training activities provided by Knox Little Athletics and Seniors (where training overlaps between the two) at Knox Park (although training does occur off site in some cases).
Index Track & Field (T&F) Summer Program
Always call the coach first, because : • This page can be out of date as coaches schedules can change at short notice. Work and family commitments come first. • The centre can sometimes be booked by other organisations and schools during the day, evening and weekends - Call the coach for more info. Also check the calendar. • Due to the large numbers of athletes attending training at Knox, coaches may sometimes have to restrict numbers where safety, control, ability and size differences of athletes is a concern. • Some coaches are fully booked up, but don't worry there is always sometime else to train in! • If there are competitions on or close to the day of training or if the weather is inclement or very hot it is best to check with the respective coach before setting off for the track - it may have been changed. • During relay training season Oct to Dec many coaches are occupied with relay training and are less available for specific event training. • When there are relays and major meet dates such as the EMR and State Championships, many coaches are likely to be at these competitions and therefore not available for coaching on those dates (which are listed on the Calendar webpage). • Also many coaching sessions are suspended during the public holiday breaks. If in doubt check with the individual coach.
If attending coaching for your first time, please contact the coach beforehand to confirm training days and times.
Knox is privileged to have many outstanding coaches in all specialty areas. The centre thanks the Knox coaches (all of which are parents of present and past athletes) for their ongoing, unpaid hard work and dedication. If you want to join the team and start on the road to becoming a track and field coach contact the Coaching Coordinator (details below).
The Knox Park facility is used by several groups, including Knox Little Athletics Centre. Dedicated training and competition times are allocated to each group. For coaching/training purposes Knox LAC is allocated Monday and Wednesday evenings. Athletes can simply turn up for any of these sessions but a courtesy call to the coach is advised. Some coaching/training is provided outside of the allocated times and at other venues - call or email the coach directly or email HERE!! for details.
Please note that commencing coaching at the end of the season is not the best time to start training. Many coaches & athletes (who have been training for months) are finishing off preparation for Region and State competitions. Minimal improvement would be gained a week or so out from Championships. Best improvement comes from weeks & months (even years) of training : refining technique, skill, strength, speed and endurance from consistent practice prior to competitions. Remember the 3 P's : Planning , Preparation & Practice !

In older junior age groups U14-U16 there is some overlap in coaching between juniors and seniors. Several coaches train athletes from both camps. Hence while some coaches only train seniors they actually also coach Little Athletics registered athletes. Training conducted by seniors is generally unsuitable for young athletes for a variety of reasons.
Summer Season : Track & Field (T&F) runs from Sep to Mar each year - pre-season coaching is conducted by several coaches Winter Season : Cross Country Season runs from Apr to Aug each year
Summer T&F Season Program - September to March Event Day Time Coach Comments
• To save time, athletes should arrive 10-15 minutes early, have a sip of water, get changed and warm up (1 or 2 laps on the grass) to get the most out of each session. Static stretching is best done after training.
• Junior athletes training on seniors days MUST stay in their designated training area and lanes and keep out of the way of senior athletes.
The coaches recommend junior athletes train in all event areas, especially at younger ages. Plenty of time to specialise once in seniors.
